Species Distribution - Dragonfly
   Sha Lo Tung
    Site Description

Located in the northeastern New Territories of Hong Kong, Sha Lo Tung is an upland valley cradled by steep hills on all four sides. Streams meander through woodland, scrubland, grassland and abandoned paddy fields in this valley and create diverse wetland habitats that support the richest diversity of dragonflies in the territory. To date, more than 70 species of dragonflies have been recorded in Sha Lo Tung out of a total of 116 species known from the whole territory. The number of dragonfly species recorded in the area is higher than for any other site in Hong Kong.

    Site Protection

The site is zoned as Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Conservation Area, and Green Belt on the relevant Outline Zoning Plan.

    Survey method

The surveys focused on adults and were carried out on sunny/fine and windless days between 09:00 and 15:00. Walking transect count method along a standard route was adopted. All the dragonflies observed along the transect were identified visually, with the aid of a pair of close-focusing binoculars, to species level following Wilson et al. (2004).
